WordPress e-commerce options
December 15, 2008
The ease of use and customization capabilities associated with WordPress make the software highly attractive for website owners, especially with one-click install solutions like that offered on our linux hosting accounts (Don’t be fooled by those charging an arm and a leg + your unborn child to install it for you – choose to pay for tweaks and customizations, not installs).
With the widespread usage of WordPress as both a blogging platform and a CMS, you would think there would be a wide variety of e-commerce shopping cart plugins available. Unfortunately, there are few e-commerce solutions that meet the needs of internet shopkeepers, with the exception of Wp-ecommerce and The Market Theme. A few others exist, including Shopp, but we have not tested their Beta.
Wp-ecommerce is one of the most widely known solutions, and though known as “buggy,” the latest releases appear to function better than previous versions. WP eCommerce is easily installed and integrates with Google Checkout, Paypal, Authorize.net, Payment Express and many other trusted payment processors.
Plus: Free Version, Multiple Features.
Minus: We’ve found that running other scripts within your theme may break the functionality of the cart or theme. However, the latest release seems to have alleviated that particular issue.
Big Plus: Wp-ecommerce themes are available to make building your site easier! iThemes has developed one such theme.
